We will be staying at an apartment near Piazza Mazzini near the Ottaviano Metro station. What would be a good local resturant nearby?

Settembrini, Via Settembrini 27 is a great restaurant, but not cheap. However, they have just opened a great little cafe/bookshop near by which is good for less expensive bites. Also, Pizzeria San Marco at Via Tacito, 29 is great for pizzas, pastas and meats, at good prices.

Giacomelli, Via Faà di Bruno, 25 is a really "local trattorìa" very traditional and not expensive, where you may feel the tradition of the roman way of cooking and eating.
Should you walk a little farer from Piazza Mazzini I may confirm the suggestion of my friend Andrea for the "dal Toscano al Girarrosto" in Via Germanico, 58 , but I may add "Il Matriciano", in via dei gracchi, 55, probably the best restaurant in the area, still at reasonable prices and still in line with the roman cooking tradition and "atmosphere"; they have a wonderful selection of wines too, so if you do not want to spend too much but gain a very good quality at the same time, you may try their Peppoli (Chianti selection) or get enchanted by their Brunello ...
Should you like to have guided orientational tours in the citi of Rome, you may have a look at my website www.tourguideinrome.it.
Have a nice dinner! Maruo
