- Less than a half-hour ferry ride from Fremantle or an hour from Perth, Rottnest Island is a vehicle-free playground for all the family. Go snorkeling at one of the many beautiful beaches, hire a bicycle and circumnavigate the island in an afternoon, and watch out for quokkas - a small marsupial found only on Rottnest Island. Day-tripping to Rottnest is popular, but stay overnight at the Rottnest Lodge or in a hired cottage to really experience the relaxed "Rotto" atmosphere loved by Perth locals.
