First thing to decide when checking out hotels in Sacramento: what neighborhood are you planning on staying in?
Sacramento, of course, is the capital of California, and if you're in town for something government-related or just want to be within easy walking distance of the sights of the capitol building, look for something in the western part of downtown. The Hyatt Regency and Residence Inn are right across the street from the capital park, and are surrounded by wine bars and restaurants in addition to having nice capitol views.
Just west of here is Old Sacramento, a fun neighborhood that's been preserved and restored from its centuries-old state. The Embassy Suites and Delta King hotels are in the heart of Old Sac, and also have nice river views. This location is still within easy walking distance from the capitol, too, and from other parks and some museums.
If you're looking to be closer to Arden Fair and the California Expo for the state fair or other event, you have a number of options. Larkspur Landing and Vagabond Inn are very close, located just outside of the Expo grounds.
Most convenient for in-and-out business travelers is the Four Points Sacramento and the Holiday Inn Express. The Sacramento International Airport is outside of town to the northwest, and these hotels are closest to the airport and are along the freeway between the airport and downtown.
There are a few other areas around the perimeter of Sacramento worth a visit, too. Folsom Lake is fun for camping and fishing, and the nearby Lake Natoma Inn offers a comfy stay on a smaller lake in close proximity. Wine tasting in nearby Lodi to the south? Try the clean and comfy Holiday Inn. Or attending a graduation at UC Davis? The Hallmark Inn and University Suites are within a block or two of campus.
