  • It's Saturday night and you don't feel like putting on tight pants -or a mini skirt- and dancing to electronic music. It's Tuesday and you've just finished work. Or you're going to meet up with a friend and want to be able to carry a conversation without shouting. Whatever the case, sometimes a pub is just better than a club. And Salt Lake City has a lot of them -many of which are breweries as well, and often award-winning ones at that!

For brew pubs, you can chose from Squatters, Red Rock, and Desert Edge. For an olde world style pub, check out Piper Down or Beerhive. To catch a game on TV and grab a bite, head to Fiddler's Elbow. To play a game of pool and a pitcher, head to Fat's. Or for live music head to How Wallow or Junior's Tavern.

Many people are somewhat rightly afraid of Utah's bar scene -with its history of restrictions and its mysterious "private clubs". Fret not, as these clubs are now relegated to history. As of the summer of 2009, this silly, membership-requiring rule has been written out of the state law books. Some unusual restrictions remain, though. Namely: beer stronger than the famous "3.2"-percent may not be served on tap; rather you must purchase "full-strength" in bottles. Also, liquor servings are still restricted by mechanical pouring devices; but the size has increased by 50% to 1.5 oz. Still small, but an improvement nevertheless!
