The Wasatch Region is home to roughly 1.5 million people of diverse backgrounds. Though most come to Salt Lake City to play outdoors, shopping is also one of the top things to do in the area. In fact, people sometimes drive hours from nearby cities just to shop in Salt Lake City.
Why? Salt Lake has large indoor and outdoor malls with department stores and designer garb. It also has many boutique shops for clothing, furniture, and gourmet foods. It has large all-you-need box stores like Ikea and Best Buy. It has conservative and modest clothing options as well as edgy, punk rock, and clubbing wear.
Salt Lake City is also home to one of Patagonia's few outlet stores across the United States -a place where its famous outdoor clothing and outerwear becomes somewhat affordable! (Check online to see whether a sale is coming up; these usually occur around big holidays like Labor Day and Memorial Day.)
If you're feeling like shopping local, check out the summer Farmer's Market in Pioneer Park. Or stop by Children's Hour in the 9th and 9th Neighborhood. The young and hip can pick up some slightly used gear at Pib's Exchange. Or book lovers can purchase rare volumes at Sam Weller's Books.
Of course, if you came to hike, bike, ski, or boat -but forgot any of your gear, consider a stop at REI, on 3300 South Street -right en route from Downtown to the Wasatch Mountains. This national store has a very complete and varied inventory, and the best returns policy imaginable.
