  • For an unforgettable dining experience, take a trip in the lift to the top of Mönchsberg and enjoy an evening (or an afternoon) at Restaurant M32, one of the best restaurants in Salzburg. Sitting high atop the Museum Moderne, this pleasant room has a wall-length window overlooking the river and the glittering city below. It's our favourite restaurant to take out-of-town visitors to Wow! them with the sights of beautiful Salzburg.

Another great restaurant with an added Wow! factor is Stiftskeller St Peter, next to Abbey St. Peter's church. This restaurant has been serving food to hungry guests since 803, making it the oldest restaurant in Europe. In its wood-panelled rooms, you'll enjoy some of the best traditional Austrian food around, including Tafelspitz, the delicious boiled beef speciality (don't knock it until you've tried it, honest!) and the local specialty dessert, Salzburger Nockerl, a crème-filled dumpling. One is enough to serve two or more, depending on your appetite.

One of Salzburg's insider secrets is Restaurant Wasserfall, a delightful restaurant serving Mediterranean specialities. This is a particularly good place to go for seafood, which is excellently prepared and garnished with sauces combining intriguing flavours and textures. The dining room is not large, so book ahead to avoid disappointment.

Also not to be missed is Ikarus at Hanger 7. Rarely do travel sites recommend restaurants found near urban airports; that Ikarus so often makes the list of top Salzburg restaurants in spite of its location says something about the unique experience it offers. It is worth seeking out.
