Although Salzburg offers a plethora of places to eat in its intimate centre, going off the beaten track can bring you to some really great restaurants. Schlosswirt zu Anif, located just a little to the south in the nearby village of Anif, serves superb food in a charming, historic inn. It's so good, in fact, that Austrians will detour on their way between Munich and Tyrol to have a meal there. Schlosswirt combines traditional Austrian style, complete with trachten-clad servers, with outstanding cuisine with a modern sensibility.
Also worth going out of the way for is Angusta Grill in St Gilgen, another nearby village, this time a little north of Salzburg. Set on the shores of the beautiful lake, Wolfgangsee, St Gilgen has a special connection to Salzburg because it was the home of Mozart's mother, Anna Maria. Angusta Grill, in the mountains surrounding the town, serves Irish beef, grilled to perfection, as well as other specialities.
One of Salzburg's finest restaurants is Ikarus at Hangar 7, the private (and free to the public) aircraft museum owned by Dietrich Mateschitz, creator of Red Bull. This off-beat restaurant, located just west of the airport, serves a degustation menu that changes each month as a guest Master Chef takes over the kitchen. Each menu is 'set', with no a la carte, and each is pricey.
Of course off the beaten track doesn't have to be expensive. Also on the west side of Salzburg, in Europark shopping mall, is tiny Yaoyao, which serves amazing and innovative Asian fusion food at reasonable prices. Not far from Europark, in quiet Liefering, is Restaurant Hartlwirt, also very reasonably priced.
