  • Even if you're not the outdoors type, you shouldn't miss the spectacular natural beauty of the lakes and mountains in the Salzburg region. That's why our top Off-the-Beaten Track choice is Kaprun, a short (about 2 hours) drive from Salzburg. A visit to its two high-mountain reservoirs, which supply electricity to Salzburg and across the European grid, combines breathtaking mountain views, a peek into the history of the region and technology, old and new.

A little closer to Salzburg is Untersberg mountain, which is accessible by cable car or by hiking. We've put the cable car on our Top Ten list because it's accessible to all, young and old, and because it whisks you up to the top of the mountain where you'll find jaw-dropping views, all the way into Germany. The Salzburg region offers a treasure trove for history buffs.

In the Salzkammergut, about two hours from Salzburg lies Hallstatt. This storybook-charming village nestles between soaring mountains and crystalline lake Hallstätter See. It combines wonderful scenery with a chance to explore the world of the Iron Age people who first mined salt in the region.

Closer to the city itself, the Celtic Museum in Hallein also gives visitors a peek into the past with accessible displays. Or see how the farmers and country people lived and worked at the Freilicht Museum.

Finally, Salzburg is rich with exquisite Baroque churches, but some are frequently overlooked. In particular, St Erhard sits near the Altstadt but is off the radar of most visitors. And from Maria Plain at the northern edge of the city, the view of the city and the plains to its north is wonderful.
