  • Capture the romance of historic Salzburg in one of its centuries-old hotels. You can find good accommodations to fit a range of budgets, and capture the spirit of Old Salzburg from the moment you check in. Right on the river, the Radisson Blue Hotel Altstadt offers an upscale experience within walls that still tell of Salzburg's past. It's convenient to the main attractions of the city, whether on the Left or the Right Bank. Also in the Altstadt is the Goldener Hirsch, one of the top luxury hotels in the city. With a history that goes back to the 15th century, in more recent times the Goldener Hirsch has played host to many celebrities, especially those attending the famed Salzburg Festival.

    Good lodging in historic surroundings doesn't have to mean top prices, though. The intimate Hotel Elefant, in the heart of the Altstadt, is somewhat more affordable. On the Right Bank, two hotels on Linzergasse, The Gablerbräu and the Stadtkrug, are pleasant hotels in historic buildings.

    For a hotel with a difference, check out the Schloss Mönchsberg, a fairy-tale castle set in beautiful gardens. For a romantic holiday away from the bustle, book into Die Gersberg Alm. An out-of-town retreat since Mozart's time, it overlooks Salzburg from high on Gaisberg's flanks. Or for an Austrian countryside experience - but still a short bus trip into the city's centre - chose Hotel Schlosswirt near Anif, in Salzburg Süd.
