Collegiate Church (Kollegienkirche)

Description:

  • Even in a city filled with Baroque architectural masterpieces, the Kollegienkirche stands out. Its convex façade with towers presides over Universitätsplatz market under a majestic dome, one of the landmarks of the Salzburg skyline. Designed by the master Baroque architect, Fischer von Erlach, and built between 1694 and 1707, the church is in the form of a modified Greek cross. This imposing yet graceful church became a model for church architecture throughout the region north of the Alps. The interior, with its soaring high dome, is surprisingly serene. The recently restored high altar, with its stucco decorations, seems particularly suffused with light.
