Residenzplatz 1, Salzburg, Austria
NileGuide Expert tip:
Notice the gallery cards in the corner of each room. They're particularly enlightening about the exquisite stucco ceilings.
On the second floor of the Residenz (above the State Rooms), the Residenzgalerie houses an impressive collection of art. Focusing on Dutch, Flemish, French, Italian and Austrian works, the collection is arranged chronologically and by theme. The helpful curatorial explanations are in English as well as German. The collection includes Flemish works by Joachim Beuckelaer, Jan Brueghel the elder, and Peter Paul Rubens; Dutch works by Aelbert Cuyp, Jacob Isaacksz van Ruisdael, and Hermensz van Rijn Rembrandt; French works by Francois Boucher, Gaspard Dughet, Charles le Brun; Italian works by Federico Barocci, Battista Dossi, and Bernardo Strozzi; Baroque and 19th century Austrian works.
