Visit the Dom museum, which is open during the summer and in December. Your entrance fee includes a trip to the organ loft, from which you can see the ceiling frescos and down into the cathedral nave.

  • Description:

    • The largest of Salzburg's 36 churches, the Dom is also the first early Baroque church north of the Alps. The present building was consecrated in 1628, replacing an earlier structure that had been destroyed by fire in 1598. It owes its Italianate style to the court architect, Santino Solari, who drew inspiration from the Renaissance architecture south of the Alps. The magnificent façade serves as the backdrop to the Salzburg Festival's annual outdoor production of Jedermann (Everyman).

Constructed in a broad barrel vault with chapels off the side aisles, it has a large dome over the crossing that fills the interior with light. The dome, asp and aisles are decorated with frescos in warm tones. The dome was badly damaged by a single bomb in World War II. Restoration of the dome with its frescos was not completed until 1959.
