Description:

Salzburg has so many outstanding Baroque churches that some of its jewels are all too often overlooked. Such is the case with the magnificent Baroque church dedicated to St. Erhard. Although in central Salzburg, this church sits slightly out of the way, just south of the Festung in the Nonntaler Hauptstrasse, under Nonnberg Abbey. However, if you have the time, it should not be missed.

An architectural gem, it was designed by Giovanni Gaspare Zuccalli, who was one of the major forces responsible for introducing Italian Renaissance architecture into Germany and Austria. Built between 1685 and 1689, St Erhard church has a slightly lifted main gate with a double-sided staircase, which was necessary in the 17th century because of frequent flooding in the Nonntal district. Other architectural elements include octagonal bell towers and a massive dome decorated with stucco work by Francesco and Carlo Antonio Brenno and Ottavio Mosto.
