Description:

Standing 1,853 meters (6,079 feet) high, Untersberg is the largest Alp near Salzburg and dominates the southern skyline. A mountain massif, it straddles the border between Austria and Germany. Its caves and hidden passages have inspired many legends and stories over the centuries. By one account, Karl der Große – Charlemagne – sleeps inside the mountain, ready to awaken and return to the empire he founded. Many trails lead up Untersberg and some are accessible to the casual mountain walker. The easiest way to the top, however, is the cable car that departs from the station at St Leonhard. The ascent has its stomach-dropping moments, but once on top, there are relatively easy trails to explore. From the top, you'll have Salzburg spread at your feet. You can see well inside Germany as well A gasthaus, open since 1961, serves drinks and casual meals from a rustic cabin with a patio offering panoramic views.
