The Golden Star Cafe

• It used to be San Antonio's only all-night Chinese food place, but now the Golden Star closes after the late-night club people go home. Located just west of downtown, it serves Asian food and some American dishes, too. The restaurant is a revamped diner with large red dragons along the walls, a combination that gives it an Asian-American feel. Try the almond chicken, served with an excellent sauce made of a thin, soy gravy, or go for the beef and broccoli, which comes with the steamed broccoli served on the side and is not covered in sauce like it is at many places. This place is a little pricier than most of the casual Asian restaurants in San Antonio, but the portions are big enough for two. Plus, if you are in need of pork-fried rice at 4am on a Friday, you can get it here.
