- San Diego might be recognized internationally for its close proximity to the beach, but there's one thing that the locals know more than anything - we love our beer. Not only are certainly neighborhoods dedicated to the drink, but we've got restaurants and breweries dedicated to the brew up and down the county. At the beach, start with a Green Flash - located right on the Pacific Beach boardwalk, it might be one of the funkier spots in town, but you'll find that the drink satisfies whatever craving you might be having. Especially during the summer sun, you'll never find a beer that quashes your thirst more than a Green Flash. Other traditional finds include the Pacific Beach Ale House and Firehouse. Head up the coast and you'll easily find Pizza Port. Known not only for its brews but it's pizza, this is a local institution with several locations around the country (including one in Carlsbad & Oceanbeach), that serves up uniquely named brews with deliciously fresh dough. On Friday nights, expect to share a picnic table with a few strangers; but don't worry, everyone is friendly here. Even farther up the coast is the signature spot of the city - the Stone Brewing Company. If you're familiar with San Diego at all, you'll recognize that name not only as a staple and nationally served hop, but also for its beer bottle. A local company (BottleHood) started turning the used Stone Brewing beer bottles into candles and cups from local restaurants, turning recycling into a whole new meaning. But back to the beer - you've got to try the official beer at the site itself, where a fine restaurant is not the only attraction. With a garden out in the back, and movie summer nights featuring fresh pretzels and dogs, you'll never want to try another brew again.
