Beach Cities

In San Diego, the beach is a way of life. With coastal destinations ideal for both the tourist and the local, anyone can enjoy what San Diego's beaches have to offer - from surfing and sailing to bike rides on the boardwalk, sun bathing, snorkeling and superb diving locations where lobster and other local treats are found.

As most people think of San Diego as a coastal town, the majority of tourist destinations are found here - La Jolla, downtown San Diego, Pacific and Mission Beaches and even northern counties like Del Mar, Cardiff by the Sea and Carlsbad. The only characteristic that generally ties each together is their location to the beach, but with everything each area individually has to offer you can never go wrong. As the beach remains the main focus, outdoor activities thrive - La Jolla Shores offers easy accessible snorkeling spots, kayaking, scuba diving and surfing; Carlsbad houses the best surfing spots in the nation, and are ideal for veteran surfers; Del Mar features beaches that include grassy knolls perfect for picnics and long walks, while Torrey Pines's hiking trails overlook the pristine sea. Pacific Beach and Mission Beach are typically the most packed areas during the summer and early fall months with college students, as the cities typically house students from the neighboring universities - UCSD, USD and SDSU.
