NileGuide Expert Says:
Because of its elevation, during winter you can often play in the snow at Mt. Palomar, especially fun if you've spent the morning on the coast sunning on the beach, before heading up to the mountain.
NileGuide Expert tip:
Due to budget cuts, most trails, day use areas and campgrounds are closed from November 30th through March 31st.
Description:
- Don't be fooled by the sprawling beaches that encompass San Diego, as Palomar Mountain State Park is anything but a day on the beach. Travel high and deep into the mountain ranges of Palomar Mountain and you'll find some of nature's most secretive and seclusive campgrounds. Far from civilization yet deep within Mother Nature, Palomar Mountain State Park can be a quick day trip or a weekend getaway (depending on how deep you'll willing to drive into the mountain). No matter the season, you'll find yourself in need of a jacket as most campsites are covered by massive trees; day and camp sites offer excellent hiking and biking trails. Additionally, grab your fishing gear as Doane Pond maintains a healthy amount of trout year round.
