Two day walking/dining tour of downtown San Diego

Description:

Downtown San Diego is a fun city to explore on foot. Spend one day walking along the scenic boardwalk, visiting the maritime museum, the tall ships and Seaport Village. Great dining along the way. Begin the second day with a Bay boat tour and then afoot learning about the history of the Gaslamp quarter district.

Day 1 - San Diego

Begin your morning with breakfast either at The Brickyard (675 West G St, (619) 696-7220, Daily 6a-2p) or at The Cheese Shop (627 Fourth Ave., (619) 232-2303). Walk down to Seaport Village. There are a number of shops and eateries in this “created” village that are a little touristy. Make your way to the boardwalk. To your right (as you face the Bay) walk towards the battleship Midway, the Star of India and to the San Diego Maritime Museum. Have lunch right on the Bay at Anthony’s Fish Grotto (near the Star of India) or grab a seat at the bar of the Fish Market (adjacent to the Midway) if you just want appetizers. See if there are any tables with a bay view. Dinner options are endless downtown. If you are in Horton Plaza shopping mall try Napa Valley Grille or Panda Inn. Right around the corner is Athen’s Market for Greek fare or Salvatore’s for pricey Italian in an elegant setting

Day 2 - San Diego

Take a boat tour along the Bay and become acquainted with the Gaslamp quarter. If you’re an early riser, go for breakfast to Café 222 on Island Ave. This is a popular spot for locals with a delicious menu. After breakfast, hop on a boat to take in the city afloat with San Diego Harbor Tours. Taking in all that fresh air will build up your appetite for lunch. Head over to Kansas City Barbeque for finger licking ribs and corn on the cob. If you’re not a boat person, then begin your day learning about the history of the gaslamp quarter. Consider talking a walking tour of the Gaslamp district. Walking tours are offered Saturday mornings. Visit the William Heath Davis Historic House Museum (410 Island Ave.) and learn more about the history of the Gaslamp quarter. Dinner suggestions: try La Strada for great pasta dishes. If you have a craving for pizza then head for Sammy’s California Woodfired Pizza. Nightcaps at Café Sevilla for a Spanish-inspired evening or jazz at Croce’s.
