San Francisco is one of the most expensive cities in the United States, so you won't find any $40 hotel rooms (that you'd want to stay in) here. You can, however, find some affordable accommodations near popular sites if you don't mind no-frills lodging. While the neighborhood may still be a bit dicey, you can't beat Hotel Carlton, just blocks from Union Square. Love a good historic motor lodge? Try the Cow Hollow Motor Inn near the Marina district. They may not have every amenity that the more spendy hotels have, but these rooms are clean and safe. Besides, with all the great things to do and see in San Francisco, who wants to hang out in their hotel room?
