  • Few cities in the United States boast the profusion and quality of Chinese restaurants like San Francisco. From Hunan to Sichuan to Cantonese to Shanghainese, every aspect of Chinese cuisine is represented here.

One thing you won't find is the usually ubiquitous P.F. Chang's chain, and with good reason! It wouldn't stand a chance against R & G Lounge, our top pick for Chinese food in the city. Sure the lines can be long, but even Anthony Bourdain knew to wait for their signature salt and pepper Dungeness crab.

Uniting traditional Chinese cooking with California influence, Chinese dining in San Francisco reaches far beyond the standard beef and broccoli. Refined Jai Yun really ups the ante with a 24-course prix fixe dinner, which consistently promises to be a flavor extravaganza. Tommy Toy's, a sophisticated restaurant which infuses Chinese with French cuisine, is a prime choice for a business dinner. Golden Era will please even the most finicky vegan or vegetarian, and meat-eaters won't be disappointed either.

Dim sum lovers rejoice as there is no lack of dumpling carts and BBQ pork buns. Best dim sum bets include Yank Sing downtown and City View on the edge of Chinatown. Expect a wait at both as you'll be battling with elderly Chinese locals for a coveted seat at the round table. Hong Kong Lounge is also a great spot for dim sum in the Outer Richmond; even better is their prix fixe dinner - $85 for five dishes including lobster and soup, all of which is easily shared with a few people.

Sometimes you just crave a cheap, hole-in-the-wall dive, and Henry's Hunan is just that. Serving up huge portions of spicy, aromatic, and delicious MSG-free Chinese food in a drab environment, this place definitely won't break the bank and will leave you incredibly satisfied.
