  • Tortas, tacos, and tongue - the array of Mexican restaurants in San Francisco will please even the most fickle burrito buff. Mexican food permeates every corner of the city and thankfully you can always find a taco truck or taqueria within a few block's walk.

The Mission's Latino influence makes it the starting point in the search for the best Mexican cuisine, and not surprisingly, Velvet Cantina on 23rd and Valencia tops the chart. With a casual, lively atmosphere, and offering succulent Mexican specialties like cactus enchiladas and an intensely flavorful mole sauce, you'll never be disappointed by the food or the scene. Equally delicious and extremely popular Nopalito is more upscale without being pretentious or overpriced. The chefs use organic, local ingredients and the quality shows in all of the menu items as well as their artfully-crafted libations.

Taqueria Cancun perpetually tops Best Burrito lists in the city; however, we're giving the honor to praiseworthy Pancho Villa. The long, but quick-moving line proves this place is tried and true, but the grilled-to-order meats and bursting burritos seal the deal, not to mention the abundance of vegetarian options offered.

The Little Chihuahua is a purveyor of sustainable ingredients and, naturally, you can taste the difference in their organic meats, fish, and homemade salsas. In a similar fashion, newcomer Tacolicious adamantly supports local farmers and is fast-developing a loyal contingent in the Marina for its sophisticated take on tacos as well as its kid-friendly vibe.

Trendy Mamacita and centrally-located Colibri woo the professionals and tourists who want a more refined, sit-down experience. San Jalisco and Nick's Crispy Tacos entice with their hangover brunch and potent margaritas. All-around greats El Metate and the Ferry Building's Mijita will keep the crowds happy, no matter what the craving. ¡ Aprovechar!
