The Moscone, as it's called for short, is smack dab in the middle of a very up and coming area of San Francisco. It's attached to the most peaceful oasis downtown, Yerba Buena Gardens, and heavy hitter museums like the never disappointing SF MOMA, architecturally complex Contemporary Jewish Museum, and a battalion of others, extend in all directions from 4th and Howard.
St. Patrick's Church looks dwarfed by the Marriott next door, but should not be overlooked. If you just want to veg out after talking to convention people for 8 hours straight, the Metreon will do you right with its modern movie theaters and feature films. A random selection of shops and restaurants round out the mini-mall.
Good, clean fun can be had the Yerba Buena Bowling Alley. This place is popular for private parties too, so if you are looking for low-key way to bond with prospective business partners or your employees from the convention, this spot might not be a bad idea.
An art museum, a deafening waterfall, a tea lounge, a restaurant and bar, and a lovely expanse of plush green grass, form the serene Yerba Buena Gardens. A respite from convention chaos, this open space is a natural observatory to take in the sounds and sights of downtown San Francisco. Don't miss a stroll around the Martin Luther King, Jr Memorial and waterfall, especially stunning at night, and also the vibrant gardens on the upper terrace of The Esplanade, which features flowering plants from San Francisco's thirteen sister cities.
The SFMOMA stays open until 8:45 p.m. on Thursday nights for half-price admission. If you're keen, come by after the show for an inspiring stroll through these world-class galleries, and be sure to grab a coffee on the peaceful rooftop garden.
