San Francisco is a fabulous melting pot of style and culture; reflected as much in its architecture as it is in its inhabitants. This variety extends to the many hotels and motels spread throughout the city. There are romantic boutique hotels, posh luxury towers and kid- and budget-friendly choices appealing any type of traveler. Order room service with your sweetie while enjoying the incredible views from a luxurious and romantic suite at the Mandarin Oriental hotel in the Financial District or grab the kids and stay at the retro 50's motel lodge-style Hotel Del Sol right near Fisherman's Wharf. You'll find the majority of the hotels near the shopping mecca of Union Square, within easy walking distance to many popular San Francisco sights and the superb Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) public transportation system.
Keep in mind that San Francisco is a convention city so it pays to make reservations well in advance of your visit. In additional to convention-goers, the city is popular year-round with visitors from all over the world, so you won't find much variation in hotel prices throughout the year. Speaking of pricing, San Francisco hotels aren't cheap. The prices, especially rack rates, can be daunting but there are still deals to be had. Don't be shy when asking about discount rates or specials.
Like many major metropolitan areas, you may find many of the hotel rooms to be quite undersized. If you want or need extra space, it's a good idea to ask about the room size before booking. Wi-Fi is widely available, often without an extra charge. If you're driving into town, make sure to also inquire about parking, as on-street parking can be a major challenge in some parts of town.
The weather in San Francisco is fairly mild all year so smaller hotels may not have air conditioning. Wherever you choose to stay, it's unlikely you'll spend much time in your room with all of the fantastic things to do in the city!
