Neighborhood Description

Haight-Ashbury

A bohemian vibe still lives on in the Haight, a neighborhood best known for its role in 1960s counterculture. Although the area is becoming increasingly gentrified, its legacy is still seen in colorful murals, hippie-themed shops, and a clock permanently stuck at 4:20 on the corner of Haight and Ashbury streets. The Grateful Dead's old house, 710 Ashbury Street, is still visible from the outside; just be careful not to disturb the beautiful Victorian's current residents.

Much more than a tie-dyed hippie haven, the Haight also has affordable dining, mellow bars, and more up-market boutiques in store. Our favorite eateries include The Alembic, Magnolia Pub & Brewery, and Taqueria El Balazo, which tips its hat to local history with burritos named after The Dead's Jerry Garcia and Bob Weir. Aub Zam Zam serves killer martinis and cocktails in a laid-back atmosphere. The Red Vic Movie House always has a fabulous retro screening on its calendar. What's more, the Haight lies just blocks away from quaint enclaves such as Cole Valley and the outdoor wonderland of Golden Gate Park. © NileGuide
