How expensive is San Francisco compared to other parts of the USA?

It's definitely one of the most expensive cities in the US for some things (housing, gas, taxes) but you can also find cheap eats and use public transport to bring down the cost. It's still cheaper that New York when it comes to the price of a hotel room or a cocktail.

San Francisco is a pretty expensive place to live or visit. However, there are less expensive places to live near San Francisco...commuting is a way of life for many people in the area. If you are visiting, there are a lot of inexpensive outdoor activities in and around the city.
