San Francisco is full of great neighborhoods. Craigslist is definitely your best option to search for apartments but if you want to know more about the neighborhoods of San Francisco and what you may be interested in check out:

Good suggestion, Tanuka. I also agree that your link is a great way to get overviews on the different neighborhoods. It's so important to consider the character of a neighborhood and it's location in relation to work, friends, etc. when choosing an apartment.

The best localities to stay are Fremont and Union City.Crime rate is low and cost are very reasonable.Downtown San Francisco is very expensive.

Expensive neighborhoods include Pacific Heights, the Marina, Russian Hill and Nob Hill. Mid-priced alternatives include Hayes Valley, Potrero Hill, the Richmond, and the Sunset.
