A Date With The Haight
Day Note:
You'll have wake up early to catch a table at the Pork Store Cafe, but the hearty breakfast is worth the wait. Plus, you'll need the fuel before flashing back to the 1960s during the Flower Power Walking Tour, which covers 12 blocks and explores the Haight's hippy history and amazing architectural wealth. One of those treasures is the Stanyan Park Hotel. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, this award-winning hotel is reminiscent of the Victorian-era,...

Description:
They say that breakfast is the most important meal of the day. It is logical then to make breakfast a very big meal and very good one. To reach this goal, this not-too-funky spot is the place to be. Though small in dimension, the food here is huge. Every plate served is colossal, and, more importantly, delicious. It touts lots of meat on the menu. This is the Pork Store, after all. Ham, bacon, sausage, chops, all served with eggs, potatoes, toast and endless cups of strong coffee is served up by the friendly wait staff. If you are not feeling carnivorous, order a short stack of pancakes (it is actually rather tall), omelette, French toast, or a veggie and tofu scramble. Sit at a window table or choose a stool at the counter, where you can watch all that fabulous food being prepared.

Description:
The only real hotel on the east end of Golden Gate Park and the west end of funky-chic Haight Street, this small inn offers classic San Francisco-style living at a very affordable price. The Victorian structure, which has operated as a hotel under a variety of names since the turn of the 20th century and is on the National Register of Historic Places, offers good-size rooms all done in period decor. Its three stories are decorated with antique furnishings; Victorian wallpaper; and pastel quilts, curtains, and carpets. Families will appreciate the six one- and two-bedroom suites, each of which has a full kitchen and formal dining and living rooms and can sleep up to six comfortably. Tea is served each afternoon from 4 to 6pm. Continental breakfast is served in the dining room off the lobby from 6 to 10am. All rooms are nonsmoking.
Day Note:
Wake up refreshed for another day of exploring on foot. First stop: Golden Gate Park, which sits at the doorstep of the Stanyan Park Hotel. At more than 1,000 acres, the jewel of the city could take weeks to uncover; however, you can get a taste of the parks offerings on its east end, between Seventh Avenue and Stanyan Street. Highlights include the Conservatory of Flowers, the AIDS Memorial Grove, and the 1914 Herschell-Spillman Carousel. Head back toward...

Our Local Expert Says:
The park is home to the architecturally striking De Young museum, with notable collections of American painters and South American, Oceanic and African indigenous art. Across the Music Concourse is the stunning new LEED Platinum certified home of the California Academy of Sciences, the greenest museum building in the world. Check out its living roof!
Description:
Spanning three miles from the edge of Haight-Ashbury all the way to the Pacific Ocean, Golden Gate Park contains so many mini-universes and attractions you'll want to (literally) stop and smell the roses on several occasions. Die-hard nature lovers can check out the Rose Garden, the Conservatory of Flowers, or the famous Japanese Tea Garden, featuring a classic pagoda, cherry blossoms, and landscaping straight out of the Land of the Rising Sun. Golden Gate Park's natural highlight, however, is the San Francisco Botanical Garden, which features a horticultural trip around the world (don't miss the redwood grove and succulents section).
Don't miss Golden Gate Park's two world-class museums, the California Academy of Sciences and the De Young Museum. Both were completely rebuilt in their original locations in the past decade, and are worth a visit for their architecture alone. The park is also the perfect place to get active. There are tons of walking paths, several public tennis courts, an affordable pitch and put nine-hole golf course, sport fields, and picnic grounds. You can even rent a boat and head out for a delightful row on Stow Lake. Spring, summer, and fall bring a number of events to Golden Gate Park, including bluegrass, rock, and hip-hop concerts and Shakespeare in the Park performances. -

Description:
This is one of my all-time favorite places to get festive, but it's not for everybody. Dining at Cha Cha Cha is not about a meal, it's about an experience. Put your name on the waiting list, crowd into the minuscule bar, and sip sangria while you wait. When you do get seated (it can take up to two pitchers of sangria, but by then you really don't care), you'll dine in a loud -- and I mean loud -- dining room with Santería altars, banana trees, and plastic tropical-themed tablecloths. The best thing to do is order from the tapas menu and share the dishes family-style. Fried calamari, fried new potatoes, Cajun shrimp, and mussels in saffron broth are all bursting with flavor and accompanied by luscious sauces -- whatever you choose, you can't go wrong. This is the kind of place where you take friends in a partying mood and make an evening of it. If you want the flavor without the festivities, come during lunch. Their second, larger location, in the Mission District, at 2327 Mission St., between 19th and 20th streets (tel. 415/648-0504), is open for dinner only and has a full bar specializing in mojitos.

Description:
The line-up of Victorian houses called "Postcard Row" and the "Painted Ladies" is one of the most photographed residential streets in America. You'll most like recognize the view from its appearance in the opening sequence of the television show Full House, which was filmed in Alamo Square Park and meant to give the impression that single dad Danny Tanner and his girls lived in one of the magnificent Victorians (though set in SF, the series was filmed in a studio in LA). Bounded by Webster, Broderick, Oak and Golden Gate streets, Alamo Square Park overlooks the downtown area to the east, framing these turn-of-the-century homes against a backdrop of modern skyscrapers. Several are open to the public either as private home tours or as Bed & Breakfasts.
