NileGuide Expert tip:

Bundle up for your early morning pickup to the 4200 meter high El Tatio Geyser fields.

Description:

Your trip to the El Tatio Geysers starts with a frigid 4 AM pickup from your hotel in a still-asleep San Pedro de Atacama, followed by a frigid, bumpy ride up in a van with sixteen of your closest friends and a bilingual (or trilingual) guide.

The field itself is the third largest in the world, after Yellowstone and a field called Dolina Giezerov, in Russia. It has more than 80 active geysers (and 30 "perpetual spouters), though none of them shoot up to the extent you may have seen in other geothermal fields. The highest geyser eruptions are just 6 meters in height, and many of them are less than a couple of feet. Even so, they're impressive, and the combination of icy patches, and mineral ringed pools with the burbling water makes it worth the trip. There are also some hotsprings for bathing, which have been tempered with cool water. The other pools are dangerously hot, and extra care must be taken if visiting with children.

The trips are done in the morning, as this is when geothermal activity is said to be most notable, though this may not be the case. Very few travelers arrive on their own, as the trip is treacherous and the roads largely unmarked, though it is possible to try, and you would likely have the geysers mainly to yourself after all the tour groups have gone.
