  • Bar Nacional is an institution in downtown Santiago, having drawn locals for more than 50 years for simple, hearty Chilean fare served by grumpy old-timers in bow ties. It's well known on the tourist map, so expect inflated prices for what are essentially no-frills staples. Located on Calle Bandera next to the Pre-Columbian Museum and also on Paseo Huérfanos, both diners are virtually identical in style. This is where you come to sample national favorites guaranteed to cause midriff havoc: Empanadas, cazuela (a hearty chicken soup), pastel de choclo (maiz casserole), and the cholesterol-boosting lomo a lo pobre (steak and fries topped with sautéed onions and a fried egg). On any given day they offer only two dozen main courses from their voluminous menu. There are plenty of local and imported beers, spirits, and wines to choose from, as well as delicious licuados (fresh fruit juices).
