The Museo Precolobino is a centrally-located museum housed in a building dating form 1807, whic his the former Royal Customs House, inside a colonnade that faces the street on Bandera. It has a very good collection of artefacts including some Chinchorro mummies, textiles, ceramics, jewelry (including some gold), and pottery. There are osme 1500 items on exhibit, and it makes a good survey of life in the American before the arrival of the Spaniards.

Most of the museum exhibits are permanent, but the occasional exhibition is also worth a second look, and may include examples of weaving, pottery or jewelry on loan from other museums.

There are seven different rooms, and it is occasionally possible to see both the front and back of an artefact, in a hallway that has them encased in glass on all sides. An hour or so is long enough to see this museum, which is one of the best in Chile.
