Description:

The gorgeous colonial-style architecture of the Teatro Municipal (Municipal Theater) in Santiago is the oldest cultural institution in the nation, founded in 1857. Recently the building had been refurbished, and then was damaged in the 2010 earthquake, so the building is under wraps again. It sits on Agustinas, just a couple of blocks below Cerro Santa Lucia on a block that seems frozen in time, with cobblestones lining the street instead of the usual asphalt.

The theater is where most of the best dance and music lands in Santiago, and on big nights, you can see well-heeled Santiaguinos fairly spilling out of the nearby underground parking garages to quietly take their seats in the stately theater. It's mainstays are opera, ballet, classical music concerts and world accoladed pianists, with six or more productions per year, from May to November including performances by the Philharmonic Orchestra of Santiago, and the Municipal Theater Chorus. Many of these productions end their season and later go on tour outside of the country.
