Despite its status as a developing nation, the Dominican Republic features quite a lot of high-end dining, especially in its top tourist hotspots. Santo Domingo is no exception. Although most restaurants in tourist areas usually feature Latin American, European or Mediterranean cuisine, there is quite a profusion of cuisines in the rest of the city. And, of course, there are the usual fast food chains like McDonalds and Pizza Hut sharing space with local restaurants.
For a beautiful view of the Zona Colonial while you dine, head to the Pat’e Palo. It is best to go for dinner, when this restaurant overlooks the elegantly lit Alcazar de Colon. The food is a mixture of Spanish and Mediterranean. As it mainly targets tourists, expect food that is more expensive than it is worth. Another restaurant with a great food is L’Osteria, which has Italian food. Located on the Cultural Plaza, this charming place directly faces the National Theatre. Adrian Tropical has good local food, and has three locations around the city; the prettiest location is literally on the sea, on the trendy El Malecon.
For Dominican cuisine, head over to Meson de Bari, apparently among the “classiest Dominican restaurants” in Santo Domingo. On the weekends, this restaurant has a vibrant bar downstairs that features live musicians. Stick with the house specials and you won’t go wrong.
Yokomo is a unique and interesting fusion restaurant featuring Dominican sushi. Here one can expect sushi and sashimi with non-traditional ingredients such as sweet plantains. Located in the trendy neighborhood of Gazcue, this is also a favorite among locals. Another interesting fusion restaurant is Margo, which features Dominican-European food. Not surprisingly, as these restaurants offer such a unique twist, they also demand a hefty price. For those looking for maximum tourist thrills while dining, go to El Conuco in Gazcue. This restaurant has live Dominican dancing and, surprisingly, is modestly priced.
