Getting There
From Sanya's Phoenix Airport (tel. 0898/8889-5961) 20km (12 miles) northwest of downtown, daily flights connect to Beijing, Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Shanghai, and Hong Kong. There are now direct flights to a number of European airports including Heathrow as well as a selection of ex soviet airports. Tickets can be bought at the Hainan Airlines office at Shangpin Jie, Dongfang Dasha, 1st floor (tel. 0898/8827-9487). A taxi to the airport costs around ¥45 ($5.85/£2.95).
From the bus station on Jiefang Er Lu (tel. 0898/8827-2440), express buses run to Haikou (3-3 1/2 hr.; ¥65/$9.75/£4.90) every 20 minutes from 7am to 11pm; and minibuses run to Tongzha (2 1/2 hr.; ¥20 ($2.60/£1.30) from 6:15am to 5pm. Long-distance buses run to Guangzhou (16 hr.; ¥271/$35/£18) from 11am to 4:10pm; and to Shenzhen (15 hr.; ¥ 271/$35/£18) at 11:50am. There are currently no passenger boats departing from Sanya.
Sanya now has a brand-new train station (tel. 0898/3188-7222) with direct trains to Guangzhou leaving at 4:50pm, 7:35pm, and 11:55pm.
Getting Around
Taxis cost ¥10 ($1.30/65p) for in-town destinations, and around ¥40 ($5.20/£2.60) to Yalong Wan. Buses depart for Tianya Haijiao (¥4/50¢/25p) from the eastern side of Jiefang Lu. Minibus no. 102 (30 min., ¥6/80¢/40p) ostensibly runs every half0hour from Yuya Dadao to Yalong Wan but is not very consistent. Otherwise, take a minibus to Tiandu from just east of the traffic circle on Gangmen Lu and transfer to a motorcycle taxi (¥10/$1.30/65p), which will take you the rest of the way. A large, blue double-decker open top tourist bus runs from the furthest extent of Yalong Bay all the way back across Sanya Bay for just (¥5 (65¢/35p).
Bikes can be hired for (¥20 ($2.60/£1.30) per day at the Wild Green Outdoor Club (Lu Ye Hu Wai Ju Le Bu; Sanya Wan Lu (tel. 0898/8836-9968).
Fast Facts
Banks, Foreign Exchange and ATMs -- The Bank of China (open Mon-Fri 8am-5:30pm) is on Jiefang Er Lu but does not have a ATM that accepts foreign cards.
Internet Access -- There's a spot (¥2/25¢15p per hr.) on the opposite corner of the Jinhong Resort.
Post Office -- The post office (open 8am-6pm) is on Jiefang San Lu just north of Xinfeng Lu.
Visa Extensions -- Visas can be renewed only in Haikou.
