NileGuide Expert tip:

This festive city boasts one of the best Carnivals in São Paulo, with tribos electricos circulating in the streets.

Description:

According to popular belief, the fame of Aguas de Lindoia's therapeutic powers extends from surrounding São Paulo state to the moon.

Located 160km from São Paulo city, Aguas de Lindoia first gained fame in the 19th Century. Legend held that a resident frog of gigantic proportions cured those who came to bath in or drink from the locale's thermal springs, which registered temperatures of 28°C (or 82°F). An Italian medic, Dr. Francisco Tozzi, later founded a settlement around the folkloric fountains, and received the likes of Nobel chemist Madame Curie, who came to study the world's most radioactive waters.

As word of Aguas de Lindoia's springs spread, the town not only welcomed throngs of health seekers but also began bottling and exporting its renowned natural resource. In April 1969, the municipal government sent a shipment of its water to Cape Kennedy, where NASA was preparing Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin and Michael Collins for the first lunar landing. Though unconfirmed, it is thought the Lindoline agua, with its low acidity and its propensity for being absorbed rapidly into the human body, made it aboard Apollo 11.

Today, Aguas de Lindoia offers spa services and a water park stemming from its hot springs, as well as other attractions from horseback riding to hiking. The city also hosts one of the more lively Carnival celebrations in the region.
