Description:

Located about 330km south of São Paulo city, Parque Estadual Turístico do Alto Ribeira (PETAR) boasts a subterranean portfolio of 300 caves, blessed with a well-preserved archeological heritage. Above ground, a lush tropical forest covers the slopes of the Sierra Paranapiacaba mountains, where the Ribeira lowlands transition into the Atlantic highlands. The local fauna comprises jaguars, otters, marmosets and toucans, among other creatures.

Activities include visiting caves and waterfalls, rappelling caverns and rocky cliffs, and hiking. Camp grounds also are available for overnight stays.

The caves are open to guests Tuesday-Sunday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. The three access points are: Núcleo Santana - Rodovia SP-165; Núcleo Ouro Grosso - Rodovia SP-165; and Núcleo Cabloco - Rodovia SP-250, Estrada do Espírito Santo.
