Description:
Although opened in 2000, this elegant hotel embraces the architectural exuberance of early 1900s Vienna, with lots of marble, stained-glass windows, Art Deco embellishments, and Otto Wagner-inspired designs. Even the elevators have old-fashioned floor dials, classical music plays in public spaces, and function rooms carry such names as Belvedere. Forgive me a sudden craving for Sacher torte. Located in downtown Sapporo, on the upper floors of an office building, the hotel offers small but smartly decorated rooms with a slight Art Deco motif. The hotel spa, which uses hot springs tapped deep below ground and has the good Austro-Hungarian Empire name Karlovy Vary, is a huge (though pricey) plus.
