Description:

  • Quiet and green, Island Park is on the Sarasota bay front. juxtaposed (just across a busy street) to some of the city's tallest buildings. It is a favorite place for Sarasotans to exercise, walk their dogs or push their small children in strollers. Some couples, walking hand in hand, smile as they read the interesting names on the yachts docked in the marina. In the evening others sit on the grass, on a bench or a folding chairs outside of O'Leary's Tiki Bar and Grill to listen to live music. There isn't a fee for any of this, not even for parking. Nearby is the towering, colorful statue of a sailor kissing a surprised nurse in August of 1945 in New York's Times Square. The statue is based on the famous Life Magazine cover photo taken the day the Japanese surrendered and World War II ended.
