The Best of NileGuide
- Traveling to Seattle is a culinary journey for many. Many foodies plan their trips to Seattle in order to visit restaurants like The Herbfarm, home of a four-hour, nine-course dinner that includes five Pacific Northwest wines. The chefs painstakingly explain the entrees to the guests and cheerfully create alternate, interesting courses for those with special needs. Delicious food meets a good need at Farestart in Seattle. Homeless and special-needs men and women work in this café as part of a job-training program. The students and employees prepare a wholesome lunch of sandwiches, burgers and fries on weekdays. A $25 Thursday dinner is planned and orchestrated by a guest chef from the city's finest restaurants. One of the most interesting culinary offerings in Seattle is Teatro ZinZanni, a three-hour showcase of quality circus arts, comedy and cabaret accompanied with a five-course feast created by celebrated Northwest chef Tom Douglas. Each course is intertwined with the show plot. Presented in the round, the entertainment unfolds above and alongside the audience as they dine on a gourmet meal. Menu selections are elaborate yet accessible, such as the mushroom strata with artisan cheese in savory custard. The show and menu changes quarterly, but there are constant themes of improv comedy, vaudeville revue, music, dance, circus arts and sensuality. Many of the performers have worked with Cirque du Soleil. Although there is no nudity there are adult themes, so this show and restaurant is not a good choice for families with young children. For those who have the time for a four-hour dinner experience, the Tillicum Village tour is a great Seattle choice. While at restaurants on Blake Island, visitors enjoy a traditional Native-style salmon bake, arguably offering some of the best salmon to be had in the region. Delicious sweet bread accompanies the meal, and small chocolates shaped like salmon follow the feast. Following the meal, there is a half-hour performance featuring the Tillicum Village dancers and impressive special effects. Before returning to Seattle, guests can watch traditional carving demonstrations and view art crafted by local Native artisans.
