  • Shanghai was once a massive series of concessions to other nations as a result of the treaty of Nanking. While this wasn't the most ideal situation for locals, it did result, ultimately, in a varied and diverse tradition of international (mostly European) series of architecture and cuisine in Shanghai. You'll often find European-looking structures around Shanghai, especially along the Bund and in the French Concession, which is also where most of the European food is. Although the politics have changed, the culture in these areas retained some of its European influence.

In the French Concession, try Sasha's, a delightful structure with a very British outdoor patio of umbrellas in summer. Shaded with trees and shrubs, it is the single most relaxing place in the city to have an after dinner drink in the hotter months in Shanghai. The food is simple and yet pleasingly filling. From bar food on the main floor to an extremely fancy 5-star restaurant that will empty your wallet on the second floor, Sasha's has everything you look for in European dining.

Nearby the French Le Bouchon is a delightful little French eatery where you'll be able to really absorb the former French influence in the area. The food is amazing and you'll want to return time and again for the atmosphere and simple but elegant service.

Along the Bund, you'll notice the old European architecture housing some of the city's most premiere Western cuisine. M on the Bund, Laris and Mesa & Manifesto are all along this famous strip of Shanghai history. These high-priced and elite dining and drinking options serve classic European fare with delicate and beautiful decor.
