Shanghai is a city of music. Underneath the honking traffic, you'll find even the city's cab drivers are obsessed with lyrics and tune. The nightlife scene in the city is rife with live music every weekend, and that doesn't even count the impressive theaters, opera houses and dedicated auditoriums for music across the city.
Live Sound Garden, MAO Live House and The Shelter offer live performances every weekend some of which are incredibly impressive, well known names in Shanghai. You may have to pay to enter, but in all cases it is worth the few RMB cover charge to see local music performed by up and coming musicians on the rise in China.
Sound Blue, M2 Yu Yin Tang, Kaiba, and Shanghai Studio offer similarly impressive music, but on a more laid back scale. Enjoy drinks, good company and fine music with a mixed, international and music-savvy crowd at these locations.
For more high-brow music, head to Cigar Jazz Wine or George V for the softer, more subtle tones of Jazz and Blues. You'll find great musicians frequent these music hot spots, and even better perfroemers take the stage to wow you with their vocals and instrumental prowess.
