Shanghai Pudong International Airport is located on the fringes of Pudong/Lujiazui New Development Area, and as such is actually in a decent location for catching some of the fun attractions in the outlying areas of Pudong. The newly planned Disney Land Shanghai, for example, will be built in this area, and several other parks and entertainment already exist in the area.
For starters, the airport is the proud terminus of Maglev traffic. The Maglev is the fastest train on the planet at 500kmp and it deposits and picks up passengers between the airport and central Pudong. No matter when your flight, the Maglev means you can get into the city fast and thus see more of what the area has to offer.
The Botanical Gardens and Wild Animal Park in Pudong are outlying area attractions that few get to see but that no one should miss. In a city as concrete and steel focused as Shanghai-- the largest city in China-- an escape to nature is almost necessary.
For art lovers, the Yi Bo and New Sight Galleries offer the chance to experience Shanghai's love of art while in the financial quarter. Even the bankers on lunch break have to admit the art is quite good, and well worth its fame.
Finally, the Shanghai Science and Technology Museum offers outlying area Pudong a bit of academic class. The center has a massive shopping center in the basement but above ground you'll learn more than you can retain in this impressive museum.
