Shopping in Shanghai is easy. Its the most commercial city in China and the most obvious place for high end fashion, souvenirs, fabric, trinkets and even high end items like furniture or household items and pets. Anything you can imagine is for sale somewhere in Shanghai, its simply a matter of where to look. That's where we come in!
For high-end shopping and mall-style browsing, head to Plaza 66, Superbrand Mall, City Mall or famous Westgate Mall. All of these are Western-style, housing food courts, designer brands and small boutiques as well as wide, open layout designs and popular, modern decor.
For markets and bargain shopping, you'll want to organize your shopping by item as the markets are spread out around the city. For animals, plants and simple household items head to the Bird and Flower Market, where you'll often find great deals on wholesale plants and fish. Across the street is the entry to an small housing market selling fake antques.
Head to the Bund Fabric market for cheap fabric and material to work with when you get back home. You can also have clothing made on the spot to order and they will even mail the finished item to you back home if you run out of time to pick it up. Suits, dresses, curtains, couch covers-- if you can dream it up and draw it they can make it. If you want it ready-made, the Wholesale clothing market is a great place for bargain shopping.
Be wary of fakes at the Antique markets, either the Dongtai or Old Town markets, and especially all the fakes at Yu Gardens shopping area. Antiques are illegal to take out of the country, so avoid buying them at all. If its for sale and affordable, it isn't real. And, unless you are an expert on Chinese antiques, don't go out looking or you'll end up spending a fortune on a replica.
