Top 10:

Off The Beaten Path Things to Do in Shanghai

  • The Best of NileGuide
  • From excursions to a nearby cultural sex museum to psychedelic experiences in an underwater tunnel. Shanghai has a lot to offer off the beaten path. Shanghai's arts, fashion and music scenes are fantastic, it is truly a free-spirit city. Start a fun day at Moganshan, the northern art district where graffiti artists are allowed to run free (provided they aren't too free, that is!). Fill the day by visiting a few parks and culture streets, a sure way to enjoy the city without bumping into hundreds of other tourists. An evening exploration of the back alleys of Taikang Road provides a glimpse in the small art and culture shops.

Cross the Huagpu via the Psychedelic Tunnel to experience an extremely odd Shanghai expat favorite off-the-beaten-path activity. Enjoy the river even more with a rive cruise, they leave at all times of day and night and are a great way to orient yourself to your new surroundings.

Enjoy art and culture at Moganshan, and make sure not to miss the Art Scene Warehouse or Hoke Art Gallery to really soak up the city's budding art scene. The International Film Festival is a massive event in Shanghai that epitomizes the fashion and art focus of the city.

A few oddball activities include the nearby Tongli Sexual Culture Museum, the JinJiang Amusement Park and Duolun area. Round it all off with a visit to Zhongshan Park.
