One of the swankiest hotels in old Shanghai, the historic Park Hotel was the tallest building in Asia when it opened in 1934 at the north end of what was then Shanghai's race course (today's People's Square/Renmin Guangchang). A pale version of yesteryear's glory, today's hotel nevertheless retains some of its past elegance in a nicely restored Art Deco lobby. For a four-star hotel, rooms are unexciting but functional, and the marble bathrooms are compact but clean. Ask for a room with a view of Nanjing Lu (south). Service is adequate.
