Halloween

Description:

  • This festival was also known as All Hallow's Eve or All Saint's Eve in the Western countries. In Shanghai, however, it mainly enjoys a commercial significance. The theme is basically horror and fantasy. People dress up as mythical characters, usually ghosts, ghouls, witches and zombies. Various discotheques and pubs celebrate this event, more like a fancy dress party. A very popular symbol that reflects the festival's spirit is the jack-o-lantern—a hollowed-out pumpkin with carved eyes and mouth, with a candle lit within. Popular food items include candy apples and barmbrack. But expect to find all these only in posh hotels and restaurants.
