Youth Day

Description:

  • Youth Day commemorates a watershed of modern Chinese history, the May 4th Movement of 1919. Stemming from opposition to the Versailles Peace Treaty that handed Shandong Province to the Japanese, this movement grew among the masses and intelligentsia, and took the form of anti-colonial demonstrations, several of which were forcibly repressed. University students were at the forefront of the movement, and suffered the worst of the imperial backlash. Today they are commemorated by activities held in schools and universities around the country. May 4th was the catalyst for a revolution in artistic and political thought.
