Although Siena is usually a stopover for visitors to nearby Florence, it is well worth staying here for a few nights to really get to know the town. While most of the accommodations are a little ways out of the town's center, some hotels and hostels are situated in the heart of the action.
One of the town's most elegant and well-located hotels is the Campo Regio Relais, which offers you a "glance of Siena" from your hotel room window. The hotel is situated in one of Siena's historical buildings on Via della Sapienza, just steps away from the University of Siena and Academy of Intronati, perfect for those looking for a discrete and elegant hotel that is a world apart from the cheesy tourist traps dotting Italy.
Similarly well located is the Piccolo Hotel Etruria, on Via della Donzelle. It is situated a mere 50 meters from the main attractions of Siena but is in a quiet residential part of town. This is a great option for those looking for a charming little hotel with the basic amenities to settle down.
A much simpler, less-expensive option is the Piccolo Hotel Il Palio. Don't expect much more than the basics here, with a good location, just steps from the local train station.
