Finding a cheap restaurant is surprisingly easy in Singapore, a city more often associated with shows of wealth and extravagance. With the majority of the population eating out for most meals, eating on a budget is in fact the norm here, with cheap restaurants lining most street corners outwith the Orchard Road area.
For the most authentic culinary experience, all visitors should ensure they stop by a hawker centre at least once. This is Singapore's version of street food, with several food stalls housed under one roof, and are the best places to try out the local cuisine, and get an insight into the local culture while you're at it. The top three choices on the list represent some of the city's best-loved and most convenient hawker centres for visitors – Lau Pa Sat in the Central Business District, Makansutra Gluttons Bay at the Esplanade, and Maxwell Road Food Centre in Chinatown. For a more sanitised (and air-conditioned) version, try out the food courts in any of the main shopping malls.
Little India is a hotbed of cheap restaurants to suit the most budget-conscious of travellers. You'll find two Little India restaurants on the list here: Komala Vilas – hugely popular with the local Indian community for their inexpensive vegetarian fare, and Jaggi's, which dishes up authentic Northern Indian cuisine. The other Indian option on the list, Samy's, is located at Dempsey and is a local institution in Singapore.
A dim sum lunch can be a surprisingly affordable lunch option, even at the city's most expensive Chinese restaurants, but for a truly budget option check out Red Star, situated on the top floor of an HDB (Housing Development Board) block on the edge of Chinatown.
