Once the Convent of the Holy Infant Jesus, established in 1854, Chijmes is now home to several bars, restaurants and clubs and a popular destination for an evening out. It's location in the heart of the Colonial District make it a handy stopping off point for visitors to Singapore to end a day of sightseeing, and several hotels in the area make it a good option for an evening meal outwith the shopping malls and hotels.
Just around the corner from Chijmes is number one on our list of hotels, the world-famous Raffles Hotel. This Grande Dame of Singapore is renowned throughout the world as a symbol of luxury, its reputation dating back from the days when it counted Charlie Chaplin and Noel Cowards as its guests. A stay in this all-suite hotel with its palm-filled courtyards and breezy verandas enables you to relive this forgotten era.
Right across the road, Swissotel the Stamford may not boast a Colonial setting, but as the tallest hotel in the area, its higher floors provide some of the best views from any hotel room in town, as does its New Asia Bar on the 73rd floor. The next door Fairmont is linked underground via a large shopping mall with several eating options and its own MRT station.
There are several well-know brand hotels in the area, popular with business travellers thanks to the proximity to the Central Business District. For something a bit different however, boutique hotel Naumi manages to offer all the trappings of five-star luxury, and would be as suited to a business trip as a decadent weekend away. Its personalised service, rooftop infinity pool, and women-only floor all help it shine in a crowded market.
